Amarillo Man Dies in in Tractor-Trailer Accident on I-40

Gerard Nzahumunyurwa, 53, of Amarillo, Texas died after the Jeep Cherokee he was a passenger of was rear ended by an 18-wheeler between Soncy and Hope Road. The Jeep was driven by Emmanuel Musavyimana, 44, who was either driving very slowly or stopped on the interstate, creating a dangerous situation for himself and other drivers.

The tractor-trailer was driven by Noah Gibson, 42, of Knoxville, Tennessee. The Jeep Cherokee struck the cable barrier of the median and Nzahumunyurwa was ejected from the vehicle, as he was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver of the truck pulled over on the side of the road following the accident and Nzahumunyurwa was pronounced dead on the scene. I-40 was backed up for more than a mile following the accident and during the investigation and the westbound side of the interstate was shut down to one lane. It is believed that this particular driver may have been in the left lane trying to cross the center median when the accident occurred.
